At the centre of the artwork, a plumb bob forms the perfect V in the word LEVEL.

That choice is deliberate.

A plumb line establishes a single vertical reference. Level exists at 90° to that single vertical reference. The surrounding right-angle markers reinforce that relationship.

And there is another layer hidden directly within the word itself.

The word LEVEL is an ideagram.

Its typography visually embodies the very property the word describes. The two L forms establish right-angle references, while the central plumb bob becomes the V, transforming the word itself into a graphic expression of level and vertical. Even the two E forms participate in the visual language: their straight horizontal and vertical strokes evoke the geometry of a square, reinforcing the relationship between level and perpendicular.

The word doesn't merely say LEVEL. In the design, LEVEL demonstrates its own meaning.

Form and meaning become one.

The design was born from years of watching an extraordinarily simple word become warped through theoretical interpretation. We are now routinely told that “level” can somehow mean curved, provided enough assumptions and model-dependent explanations are placed around it.

But language matters.

If words can be stretched until they accommodate their opposites, meaningful communication becomes impossible.

The artwork pushes back against that distortion by returning to the physical reference itself.

A plumb bob does not care about consensus. It does not consult a diagram or conform itself to somebody's preferred worldview. It provides a physical vertical from which a perpendicular level can be established.

That is why the plumb bob becomes the V.

It isn't merely decorating the word.

It completes it.

Like the strongest pieces of visual art, the design can also be read beyond its immediate subject. True Level is about intellectual calibration: establishing a reliable reference before drawing conclusions, refusing to bend definitions to protect assumptions, and returning complicated arguments to something that can actually be examined.

It is a reminder that reality comes before the language used to describe it.

The Matrix-inspired typography and luminous green measurement graphics give the piece a technological aesthetic, while the precision instrument at its centre remains beautifully simple.
